Tuesday, March 18. The Speaker went 10 prayers at 5 p.m. The Provincial Seckbtahy laid on the table the ciiniinuation of the correspondence relative to the steamer Alma ; also, a second financial statement, brought down to March 18th. The Provincial Secretary brought forward his financial statement for the current year. The sum loial of income, he said, for the financial year, from all sources, could be put down at about £ 12,300. and the expenditure for cirrying on Government in an economical and efficient manner for the same period would amount to about £6,800 ; from the residue, £5.500, ihe stun of £3,000 must be deducted to be sent to England for emigration, and a sum of £1200 for education, leaving a sum of somewhere about £1,300 for public woiks. The works of primary importance recommended by the committee ol public works amounted to £6,000. Under these circumstances, he (the Prov. Secretary) had written m the Manager of the Union Bank to ■know if he could make an advance to the Proviucial Government, to enable them to go on with these works; the manager had written to say that he was not in a situation to make such an arrangement, hut woild wiite to the inspector at Sydney for instructions. He (the Prov. Secretan) did not see any cause for dissatisfaction in the prospects of the province in this deficiency of funds. The exports and imports had lti'ich increased, and theie appeared every prospcci of a further increase for the present year. The house then went into committee on the Roads Bill, and clauses 6—lo were passed.
