MEETING OF STOCKOWNERS.

A meeting1 of sto<:ko\vnors \v:is held at the Royal Hotel, Ci!i-isU:liurcii, on (lie evening of Thursday, the I3ih instant, to take into consideration the operation of the present Scab and Catarrh Ordinance, ami its applicability to theexisting circumstances of the province. Mr. Robert Rhodes, M.P.C., was tailed to the chair. Owing to the absence of any reporter, we lvgivt that we are unable to furnish a report of the interesting and some-

what lengthy discussion which ensued, and in which Messrs. Torlesse, W. Macdonald, Higgins, Jones, J. Hall, Meidrurn, .1. Porter, Pearson and Leach took part. The general leeling of the meeting- may be gathered from the votes given on the subjoined resolutions.

It was moved by Mr. Higgins. and seconded by Mr. limes: " Tnat in the opinion of this meeting, the Scab Ordinance in its present form has had a very beneficial operation ; that it has stimulated stockI owners to clean their flocks, and has tended to prevent fche spread of scab in this province." After considerable discussion, this resolution was adopted by a majority of 12 to two. It was then moved by Mr. Tobxesse, and seconded by Mr. Leach : " That in the opinion of this meeting, the scab will inevitably spread through the Province in the course of a few years." The resolution also gave rise to very considerable debate. On its eventually being put to the meeting, only one hand was held up in its favour. Thank* were voted to the Chairman, and the meeting then separated. Wjesleyan Chap kt,.—The anniversary services in connection with the Lyttelton Wesleyan Chapel, were held on Sunday and Monday last. On the Sabbath, two sermons were preached by the Rev. John Aid red, after which liberal collections were made in aid of the Trust Funds. On Monday evening, a public tea meeting was held, after which the Financial Report was read, and addresses delivered by Robert Latter, Esq., and the Rev. John Aldred. From the report it would appear that the expenditure on the building, land, and current expenses, had been £334 2s. od., and the receipts, £'253 9s. 3d-, leaving a debt due to the Treasurer of £80 13s. 2d- An effort has been made in connection with this anniversary to pay off this sum. which has resulted in the extinction of the debt, leaving a balance in the Treasurer's hands of £7 2s The report also states that a Junior Minister, for Canterbury, had been appoin.ed, whose arrival may be shortly expected. All the services were well attended.
