NOTICE. Province t>f Canterbury, to ivit : — WHEREAS a writ under the hand of James] Edward Fitz Gerald, Esq., Superintendent of the said Province, bearing date the 6th day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight -hundred and fifty-five, hath been directed to me, Henry John Tancred, Esq., as returning officer for the Christchurch Country District, in the said Province, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected by and from amongst the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in form and manner by law prescribed, One Person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Chrisichurcli Country District in place of Charles Simeon, Esq., resigned ; NOW therefore, I, the said Henry John Tancred, Returning officer for the Chrisichurcli Country District, do hereby in pursuance of the said recited writ give notice " That a public meeting of the electors of the Christchurch Country District will be holden in the Market Place of the town of Christchurch, on Friday, the 28th day of September inst., at noon, for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District: and in the event of a Poll being demanded for the Candidates, or any of them, such Polling shall take place on Saturday, the 29th day of September inst.; in the lobby of the Provincial Council Chamber, at Christchurch; in the Police Office, at Lyttelton ; and at Mr. Black's store, at Kaiapoi. The voting to commence at any time after nine o'clock, a.m., of the said day, and to close at four o'clock, p.m., of the^ same day. Henry John Tancred, Returning Officer. Gentlemen, — I BEG to offer myself as a candidate for the seat in the Provincial Council vacant by the resignation of Capt. Simeon. If elected I pledge myself to attend to the duties devolving on me with assiduity, and to the best of my ability. I hope to meet the greater number of the Electors previous to the days of nomination, when I shall be glad to answer any questions which may be put as to my opinions on the different subjects likely to occupy the attention of the Council. Gentlemen,— HAVIISIG been a resident on the Plains ever since the foundation of this Settlement, and during that time taken an active interest in its prosperity, I am induced to offer "'myself as a Candidate for the seat in the Provincial Council, rendered vacant by the resignation of Captain Simeon. Should you do me the honour of electing me, I shall take care to use my best energies in promoting your interests, and those of the Province generally. GENTLEMEN, — The Honorable James Stuart Wortley, having resigned his seat in the General Assembly, I beoto offer myself as a candidate for your sufirao-es'. I am aware that I have no past services to record to justify me in taking this step, but having resided amongst you for about three years, the least I can say is that I am no stranger to you. If you think fit to elect me as your representative, I will pledge myself to attend the sittings of the Assembly ; and when there, I will use my best abilities, regardless of personal considerations, to promote the welfare and interest of the colony, and of this province in particular. The limits of an address will not permit me to comment upon many questions of political moment, but at a future opportunity I hope to give you every satisfactory assurance.
