To the Electors of the Christdmrch. Country District. f^ ENTLEMEN,—Being on the eve of *JT taking my departure from this Colony, it lias become my duty to resign my seat in our Provincial Council. I beg to return you my best thanks for the confidence you have reposed in me, and to assure you that I shall always feel the deepest interest in the welfare and prosperity of this Province. Province of Canterbury, to wit .-— WHEREAS a writ under the hand of James Edward Fitz Gerald, Esq., Superintendent of the said Province, bearing date the 6th day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five, hath been directed to me, Henry John Tancred, Esq., as returning officer for the Christchurch Country District, in the said Province, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected by and from amongst the voters duly qualified for that' purpose, freely and indifferently, and in form and manner by law prescribed, -One Person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District in place of Charles Simeon, Esq., resigned ; NOW therefore, I, the said Henry John Tancred, Esq., Returning officer for the Chrislchurch Country District, do hereby in pursuance of the said recited writ give notice "That a public meeting of the electors of the Christchurch Country District will be h'ulden in the Market Place of the town of Christchurch, on Friday, the 28th day of September next, at noon, for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District: and in the event of a Poll being demanded for the Candidates, or any of them, such Polling shall take place on Saturday, the 29th day of September next; in the lobby of the Provincial Council Chamber, at Christchurch; in the Police Office, at Lyttelton ; and at Mr. Black's store, at Kaiapoi. The voting to commence at any time after nine o'clock, a.m., of the said day, and to close at four o'clock, p.m., of the same day. Henry John Tancred, Returning Officei'. Simeon, I beg to offer myself as a candidate for your suffrages. Should" you honour me by electing me one of your members I trust that my exertions to promote your interests, and those of the Province generally, would be such as to merit your approval. Gentlemen,— The Honorable James Stuart Wortley, having resigned his seat in the General Assembly, I beg to offer myself as a candidate for your suffrages. I am aware that I have no past service's to record to justify me in taking this step, but having resided amongst you for about three years, the least I can say is that I am no stranger to you. If you think fit to elect me as your representative, I will pledge myself to attend the sittings of the Assembly ; and when there, I will use my best abilities, regardless of personal considerations, to promote the welfare and interest of the colony, and of this province in particular. The limits of an address will not permit me to comment upon many questions of political moment, but at a future opportunity I hope to give you every satisfactory assurance.
