CALIFORNIA.
By the same arrival we are placed in possession of San Francisco papers to tbe 15th of May. The most novel and interesting feature in the circumstances of the Great Pacific state, is the sailing of a vessel for New York freighted with merchandise, a large part of which consisted of flour and grain the growths of California. It would appear from the following paragraph that the condition of the large numbers of Chinese in California is beset with much hardship and danger. We quote . the Alta California, May 15th :—" The Chinese are frequently most cruelly treated in the country, by knaves who take a license to murder and rob, from the decision of our courts, which denies the admissability of Chinese testimony against a white man. Two Chinamen were killed near lowa Hill, and several others wounded and robbed, by a party of four whites. But nothing is done to tbe inhuman monsters, because no white man saw them commit the deed. Laws and usages so manifestly unjust will lead to the execution of Lynch law." The accounts from the mines continued of a highly favourable character.— Sydney Empire.
