AUCKLAND.

[Krom the " Wellington Indep«ndent."] We have been favoured with a file of Auckland papers up to December 13th. The " Lord William Bentinck," Captain E. Canney, arrived there December 11. In the Auckland Town Council, Alderman O'Neil has given notice of a motion designed to lead that body to act in the matter of the monstrous claims of the New Zealand Company. The " New Zealander" in speaking of this body likens it to a Vampire, and expresses a desire to see a stake driven through its heart, and all power to injure or even to terrify in future taken frOm if. The " New .Zealander" protests against paying the claims at all, either in one form or another ; but that if payment was made it should be out of the Imperial Treasury. It was expected that the Town Council would immediately adopt a protest or memorial to the British Government on the subject. Colonel Wvnyard's appointment to the general command of the troops in New .Zealand, had been confirmed by the military authorities at home. It would appear from the" New Zealander" that his Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor is very popular, having won golden opinions from men of all classes and parties. The retail price of Flour is quoted at 15s. per cwt. Bread 2 lb. loaf, sd. H. M. S. " Pandora," 6 guns, Capt. Drury, had arrived at Auckland from Hokianga, having in the short space of two months, finished the survey of that River from the heads to the highest navigable poiut. The unfavourable state of the weather prevented the soundings on the bar from being all taken, but it is intended to accomplish this, among the other operations to which she proceeds immediately after refitting. The "Pandora" had discovered a dangerous sand bank on the West Coast, off Cape .Maria Van Diemen, hitherto thought to have been a race or reef, from the rush of breakers often observed by vessels in bad weather. On surveying it, the soundings on the bank were found to be five fathoms ; outside, sixty fathoms. The " Lord William Bentinck" sailed for Wellington via Taranaki, on December 26th, with 54 passengers from London, and the Rev. A. lleid, Mrs. Dalrymple, and Mr. Taylor, from Auckland. A motion was moved by Mr. Councillor Abraham in the Municipal Council " that all proceedings for the mposition, collecting, accounting for and auditing of all rates and assessments on property, real, or personal, or both, within the Borough, or upon the owners or occupiers of any of such property, except for the purpose of inquiry, be deferred until after the meeting ol' the Legislative Council." The "motion was seconded by Mr. Newman, and (after a remark by Alderman Powditch, that he thought some of the reasons would interfere with the legality of there being there at •ill) —it was agreed that the consideration of the question be adjourned until the several Committees shall have presented their veports. A petition to the House of Commons from the Council praying that they would not sanction any measure having for its purpose the charging of the debt or claim of the New Zealand" Company upon the Bevenue of the Province of New Ulster, would in all probability be adopted at the next meeting of the Council. The "'Calliope" was to sail from Auckland for Wellington, on Monday January 5. His Excellency Lieut.-Colonel Wynyard, Commander of the Forces in New Zealand, accompanied by his private secretary, Capt. Cockcraft, 50th liegt., were to proceed as passengers by her on a Tour of Inspection of the Troops in the Southern Province.
