CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times

g lKj —The following being of great importance to parties renting pasturage of the Canterbury Association, I hope you will give it publicity. I employed a labourer a few days ago to cut some wood, which is situated on my run, for the purposes of stockyards, &c. &c, at the same time calling at Mr. Godley's office, to take out a license, but he not being at home I requested his clerk to acquaint him. Thinking- the license would as a matter of course be granted, I told the labourer lie might in the mean time commence work. Mr. Godley has since thought fit to refuse it, accusing me with unlicensed cutting and endeavouring to evade the usual charge, although his clerk told him, in my presence, that 1 had made previous application. I have detailed these facts in order to show that if parties renting pasturag-e are not as a matter of right en titled to cut under license such wood on their runs as they may require for various purposes, they may through, the caprice of an individual be refused, and consequently their pasturages be comparatively useless. Formy own part I shall legally resist this attempt at capricious injustice; but I hope the council of Land-Purchasevs will take up the subject at their next meeting.

I remain. Sir, your obedient servant, John Hughes,

lyttelton, Aug. 12, 1851
