TAUKANGA ANNUAL REGATTA.
Ihe Tauranga Annual Begatta eventuated vesterday and was a decided successs, the arrangements throughout reflecting great credit on the committee. The weather was all that could be dtsired, and the attendance was large, there being about eight bundred spectators. Sheehan's Band, from Auckland, was in attendance and dispensed sweet music at intervals throughout the day. The s.s. Wellington acted as flagship. The following programme was gone thrcugh : — Maori Sailing Keel Boats, of 20ft and over. Hiria, 1 ; Clio, 2. Three started. Sculling Bace, for skiffs, 16ft and under. Spray, 1 ; Oyster, 2 ; Lily 3. Four started. Seconcl Class Centre-board Boats, of 20ft and under, open to all comers. Eka 1 ; Toanui 2.
Maori Wbalel oat Bace. Jane 1 ; Botohoro 2. 'J hree started. Thiswas a very exciting event, the first and second boat keeping well together. Open Sailing Centre-boaid Boats, of 20 ft and under, built in the Bay of Plenty district. Toanui 1 ; Eliza 2. Three started. This race contrary to expectations finished beiore sundown, the w ind was very light. M aori War Canoe lace, not less than 20 paddlcs-. Kaptke 1 ; Nawereke 2. Three started. At the finish the natives landed and made a feeble attempt at a haka. Open Sailing Boat Bace, of 1 7ft and undtr, time alk w ance 20 secs per foot. Yic 1 ; Wave 2. Four started. The first boat was in about 20 nunutes before the second. Skiif Bace, of 16ft and under, pulled by tw o oars and cocksw ain. Spray, 1 ; Esk 2; Iiaud 3. Five started. Sculling Bace, for skiffs of 14ft and over. For boys under 17 years of age Spray, 1. Only two started. Swimming Bace, open to all comers. T. Senior, 1 ; Chas. Tanner, 2. Five started. A race of this kind tends to break the monotony of the day. Sea-horseBace. Tommy, 1 ; Jumbo 2. Five started. Sambo came in first but for some reason was disqualified. The race for decked keel or centreboard boats, and the Oonsolation Bace are to be sailed on Friday. Several events are postponed sine die. Two different protests have been lodged against the Spray.
