This Day. John Connolly has been commi'tted for trial at the Supreme Court, for setting fire to a house in Pononsby. A twelve hours' walking match has been arranged between Iiayner, the champion walker of Melbourne, and McCune, of Auckland, for the sum of £50 a-side. Charles Brown who was hurt at Whangarei, on Friday, now lies at the Hospital with a fractured skull. In the niatter of the defence of the colony, the Agent-General has been instructed to procure £102,000 worth of war material. A torpedo corps is to be organised. The armed constabulary are to be drilled to the use of heavy guns, and the voluhteers are to have im}>roved weapons. The storm whieh passed over Auckland on Saturday was the severest that has been felt for many years. and did considerable damage to verandahs, unfinished houses, and trees. Several accideuts occuned, one terminating fataly. A mannamed William Walsh in the employ of Mr Murdoch, Epsom, was struck by a large piece of lead falling from the roof, and received such injuries that he died shortly afterwards. Miss Person was on her way to town from Newton, and took refuge from the storm under a verandah in Pitt street, the whole affair came down, a portion striking her on the legs, and breaking one in two places. Other accidents happened but not of a serious nature. A farewell meeting to Mrs Leavitt, of the Womans' Christian Temperance L nion, is to be held to-day. She goes on a temperance tour through the colonies.
