Local And General.

The s. s. Omapere is expected to arrive here on Friday. The Wellington hangman is in custody on a charge of burglary. Government surveyors have been again stopped by the Waikato natives. The Wellington came to the wharf at low water this morning, without sticking as hitherto. A correspondent writes:- "I enclose you a quarters subscription. In a late Buster issue the price of meat, milk, and potatoes was reckoned far too high; I hope the excessive price that rag charged for advertisements, will also be lowered." The s. s. Wellington, Capt. Stevenson, from Auckland, arrived 8 a.m. to-day, passengers, Mrs Harvey, Mrs Stafford, Miss Williams, Miss Morton Mr Marlow, Mr Williams, and others. The s. s. Southern Cross, Captain Hutchinson, arrived 8 a.m. to-day, from Gisborne. The captain reports having left there on Saturday at 6 a.m. and had to run into Hicks' Bay, owing to the heavy westerly wind; she brings 80 tons of cargo for this port. Mr Stout, Premier stays at Dunedin over New Year's Day. Our contemporary has as usual found a "mares nest". The District School holidays begin on the 23rd of December, and school resumes on the 20th January, making up the coveted four weeks, a little enquiry would however have let them know the School Committee were considering extending the holidays to the calendar month. So much for garbled reports. The New Zealand Shipping Coy's S. S. Kaikora, which is expected to reach Port Chalmers, to-morrow, will be despatched from the Colony on the 28th Inst., with the first of H. M. mails under the contract just completed.
