CONSTABLE GUTTERIDGE’S MURDER.
FURTHER HEARING OF CHARGE. ,(By Telegraph-Press Assn .-Copy right.) (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 28. At the resumption of the hearing of -the charges against the men Kennedy .and Browne, charged with the murder iOf-Constable Gutteridge, Mr O’Connor, counsel for Browne, drew attention to to the widespread publicity, given to Kennedy ’a alleged statement implicating Browne. The Magistrate replied: “If the statement is the only evidence against Broifrh«v;ilvill, not! commit him for trial. The statement is not evidence .against Browne ” Tiie evidence was largely confined to witnesses detailing the movements of sa ear in the neighbourhood of the murder. • During the hearing Browne read a mo tor journal and appeared to be disinterested. Kennedy’s eyes were fixed ■on the ceiling. Inspeetor Barker described the discovery of a dirty grey mask and fancy -drees at Browne’s house and also a car license, of which Browne said, * * That : is a dud license in case I was stopped,.” Barker Said few hours after "his. arrest Browne denied any connection with the murder. Giving evidence regarding Kennedy ’a arrest. Detective Mathieson, of Liverpool, said he recognised Kennedy when leaving a house which was' under observation. Mathieson : called out, ‘ Hallo, Bill, come on. ” Kennedy wheeled round and said, “Stand back or T will shoot.’’, -Mathieson closed i With .Kennedy, who whipped out an 1 automatic and thrust it into his ribs. He heard a metallic click ahd gripped Kennedy 'a arm and gave it a twist. Simultaneously he struck him a blow on the face, partly upsetting Kennedy’s balance.; He seized the revolver, thrust it . into Kennedy ’s back, and marched him down the street where other detectives were concealed. At the police station "Kennedy said he had no grouse against the police, but Mathieson should be ih; heaven. The case was adjourned.
