THEFT FROM EMPLOYER.
YOUNG MAN ADMITS GUILT. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. William George Kennedy, a farm labourer aged 23 years, who went to Palmerston North from Waikanae, enjoyed but a brief period of liberty before being taken in charge. On Tuesday morning he appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., to answer a charge of having on February 18th, at Waikanae, stolen the sum of £1 in money, the property of George William Mitchell. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge and, in detailing the circumstances surrounding the charge, SeniorSergeant O'Grady, who appeared for the police, stated that accused had been employed by Mr. Mitchell, but had been paid off on Saturday last. Kennedy had Later returned to the wharc and had there extracted from his employer's clothes the sum mentioned in the chargi l . Previously, accused had given an undertaking to a storekeeper to make good the cost of wearing apparel which the storekeeper advanced to him, but on receiving his cheque Kennedy had had it cashed elsewhere and had then departed for pastures new. Nothing was previously known against accused. The Magistrate: He apparently requires supervision. He will be admitted to probation for a term of two years, * An order was made for the return of the £l, Kennedy having had the sum of £5 9s 4d on his person at the time of his arrest.
