LARGE HOUSE DESTROYED.

OWNER’S EXCITING EXPERIENCE (By Telegraph — Press Association.) GISBORNE, This Day. A two-storey 14-roomed homestead owned by J. Prondergast, at Puha, was destroyed by fire last night. A small outbreak had occurred in the washhouse in the afternoon, and it was believed to have been extinguished. Mr Prendergast, while endeavouring to save his effects in the upper story, had a narrow escape, a benzine lamp exploding, necessitating his breaking through a window to get away. The house was insured for £2OOO. The contents were uninsured.
