TOWN SWEPT BY FIRE.
BUSINESS PORTION OF OHUEA PRACTICALLY DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, This Day. The main business area at Ohura was destroyed by a disastrous tire at nine o’clock on Saturday night. The tire broke out in Mrs A. H. Harold’s drapery shop. The flames, fanned by a westerly wind, spread to Mrs ,T. Bleasel’s general store, on the corner, then to Newton King ’s, the offices of Simpson and Bate, solicitors, Mrs J. Seerup’s drapery establishment, and J. Seerup’s tobacconist, shop, all of which were totally destroyed. The fire-fighters worked hard, but were unable to save the above-mention-ed promises/ They succeeded, however, in saving the Bank of New Zealand, which would have gone but, for the fact that the recent rainfall had filled the tanks and ensured an ample supply of water. The insurances are not yet available.
