Borough Council.
A meeting of the Levin Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr C. Blonkhorn) presided! and Crs. Matheson, Broome, Lancaster, Ryder, Bull, Aitken, Parker and Dr Bryson were also present.
> CORRESPONDENCE. The Alexandra Borough Council wrote stating that it was becoming the practice of the medical profession to send tubercular patients to favourably situated country districts. Tihe Council protested against the practice, being of the opinion that the Public Health Department should undertake the control andi care of incurable patients. —It was decided to ,support the protest. The Auckland City Council wrote expressing the opinion that dual control in tihe matter of sanitation of cities and boroughs was inadvisable and that the powers of municipalities should be enlarged to enable them to deal in a more comprehensive manner with dlwellings. The Council was. therefore, requesting the Government to enlarge the powers of municipalities and asked i for tihe co-operation of other councils. —Received. Mr James Newton, inspector of stone quarries, Auckland, wrote enquiring whether the Council operated quarries. —The Clerk reported that he had supplied the information. Dalgety and Co., Wellington, and Abraham and Williams, Palmerston North, wrote in appreciative terms of the Council's acknowledgment of tilie assistance rendered by their representatives in Levin during the influenza epidemic. It was a source of satisfaction to them to know that their officials were ill a position to render assistance during such an anxious time. The Palmerston North Hospital and Clmritab'e Aid Board notified the Council tlhat the second levy of the maintenance. instalment for the year ending: March 31. 1919. was duo on November 1, 1918. The amount was £52 12s lid. Amount passed for payment. OTHER BUSINESS. The Mayor stated that since their hist meeting, hostilities had ceased, for which they would all feel thankful. Such an event should be placed/ on record in their minutes, and he movedi: ''That this Council place on record its gratitude at the cessation of hostilities brought about by the signing of the ar--1 mistice on November 11 and»trusts that 1 a just and permanent peace will shortlly ensue." The motion was carried. SEASONABLE COMPLIMENTS. Before the adjournment of the Council, the Mayor said 'it was their last meeting for the year, and he wislied the Councillors and staff a Merry Christmas. The Mayor said the year they hacK passed through, though one of suffering, had brought joy and relief in many lands by tihe signing of the armistice and he hoped the trials and sufferings that had been enduredi wo l u!d bring a greater appreciation of till© days of peace whicli were now at hand. Or Matheson thanked_ the Mayor and wished him th« compliments of the 1 season. Cr Lancaster complimented the Mayor on the able manner in wihich he" had carried; out his many duties during the year. Mr Gardener. Town Clerk,„ also extended to the Mayor and Council sea- , sonable greetings from the staff and ; Borough employees, the Mayor, in re- , ply, expressing the hope that tlie staff and other employees would enjoy a , well-earned holiday. | In the course of his remarks at the , meeting of farmers in Levin - Mr W. H. i Field, M.P., touched on the menace of the American Meat Trust.and said every farmer should combine to resist its sinister influence. He instanced the state of affairs in South America, where before the war the farmers generally were doing well, but the combine had got in and at present tad n strong hold on the meat industry with the result that prices fell, and the farmers suffered. iHe was glad to say that Parliament ;in this country had taken steps, during the recent session, to meet the menace by legislation. This legislation was only a beginning and it was hoped that evontuallv all the large exporting interests would be undor control of the Government in conjunction with the British Government so that there would be no opening for the Trust interests to creep in.
