The German Mine.

The mine which was washed up on tho Hokio beac-h was . destroyed yesterday afternoon. Captain Hall-'llliomp-son, Naval Advkorto tho Government, accompanied by a petty officer, made a special visit from Wellington for the purpose: of • inspecting and destroying the mine. They reached [Levin about 11 a.m. and after being joimedt by Constable . BagrieJ set- out. for' the beach. The locality where the mine was washed ashore.,was soon reached and 'after some of the eand had been removed from under tlio mine, a 'charge of gunootton ■was laid.- To this was attached a length of fuse and after lighting it the party retired a distance of about <a> quainter, of a mile. The explosion, which followed was preceded by a sheet of bladk smoke which shot into tibe air to a groait 'height, together with tons of sand. It was found, that the explosion had torn a iluole in the ground from ten to twelve feot deep anu about eighteen feet m diameter, but all tlmt remained of the mine were a few small pieces of twisted metal. The explosion was /witnessed l>y a large mimber of Levin (residents and the detonation was distinctly heard in town..
