FRENCH WELL EAST OF LAON
Reccivetl this day, 8.4S a.m. I>ondon, October 14.' Sir Douglas Haig reported at 3.10 this morning: •On the afternoon of the 13th the enemy opened a be-avy bombardment on a wide front northward of iLe Gateau, launching strong infantry attacks on our position eastward of the Selle river (where the :Xew Zealanders advancedi) and in the neighbourhood of Solesmas. Thepe attacks were successfully repulsed after stiff fighting. Other attacks wherein -tanks were employed supporting the infantry assault against our positions opposite Haspres were unsuccessful. Our patrols advanced at a number oS points southward and northward of Do■uai and gained ground!, talking prisoner*.
