W. D. Bayley.
Some breezy descriptive matter was indulged in by the Dannevirke (News in reporting tho, meeting addressed by W, D. .Bayley, 8.A., who speaks here next. Wednesday. It said:
Put W. D. Bayley, vice-president of the Winnipeg Labour Coundil and teacher of Isoonomiq< and History at the Collegiate institute there, on the door of a hotel, and he would look like a prosperous bonit'ace—stumpy, roundjiaced, well-complexioned, and redheaded. Put him on a platform in front, of an audience and he speedily becomes ;i do iViictiro critic of. the business—a forceful, lucid, reasoning speaker, one who does not try to impress by rant, and, cant, lint one who emp!lvasii?es by fact, and who appeals in such a manner that his prominence in the movement is thus eai-'ily explained. The fact iVhat -Mr Bayley is red-headed ledl him to say :
. "The trad© tried to draw a red 1 herring across the trail, but they could not fcol a sensible community with red herrings—especially a red-headed fellow like himself. Even if jihey licensed* the liquor traffic and charged £500 n year for the privilege of the monopoly tilii-'s would not take away tho nerve danger; neither would State Control. •'What's your ratio of pay?" asked a beery voice ill reply bo this remark of the speaker.
•Mr Bayley: If I was after money 1 would be in the other ■camp. I teach the truth in my school for a certain sum, not fixed by me. In my Siate the liquor people paid £80 a night to get a capable speaker to take the platform on their, behalf, and I r-poke over 100 times and diidi not get a cent, buii got 'he. satisfaction of helping my country. All the other .fellow said for his 100 dollars was that liquor 'tasted good going down,' and 1 snidi: 'Will you toll us how it tastes coming up?' " Mr Bayley speaks in tlh© Century Ball on Wednesday, lilie Ith inst, when questions are invited and everybody is ■isked to attend. Admission is free witlli: collodion only. Mrs Don, of Dun. ediu, who was to accompany Mr Bayley will not now be able to visit Levin.
