K. Douglas, Ltd., 011 account of the Kuku water race contract be paid. . The Chairman stated in reply to a question that Bird (the overseer of the work) had declined to attend the Council. Or Ryder warmly condemned the whole business, especially the appointment of an overseer who had not carried out his duties i properly. The Engineer should I have known his man better. The whole tiling was .a disgrace to the Council. The Chairman said he did not want to shield the Engineer in the matter at- all, but the settlers themselves were partly to blame because they did not keep their promise to appoint a man afid .the Engineer was then left to find a man. He discussed the matter with the Chairman and they decided to appoint Bird as being the only man obtainable. Cr Ryder stated that a man had called at the Council office and was told that lie was not wanted. He believed lie could produce the man, who, he stated, had called before Bird was apmted. Cr Ryder again declared the whole business was a disgrace to the Council. _ Cr iiroadbelt: It will be a lesson to us in future not to let settlers interfere with our business. Cr McLoavov siiid that without - ishing to shield the Engineer he was justified in thinking Bird was a competent man. The 'motion was carried to pay the money, Cr Catley dissenting.
