Municipal Matters.
iTho Borough Council met last evening. Tn the absenco of 'the Mayor, who was indisposed. Cr Lancaster was j voted to the chair, and there "were also present: Cr.s Broome, Mackenzie, Ryder. Parker, Aitken, Bull and Bryson. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Matlho-on. .Tll the abser>ce of the Town i\lr P. W. Goldsmith carriod oniii tlw> duties. DOMAIN BOARD. Sitting first as a Domain Board., Councillors heard a complaint from Mv Hanita that a drain had licen put through his property instead of along the boundary.—The Board decided to defer consideration of the matter pending further enquiry. Mr Cllnann:ings reported that the golf Links had been top-dressed and turfed. Mr Teal's draining contract would be finv-lied in a few days. Mr Ohamiings. in reply to a question, .say.]: the links- should bo fit to play on in a fortnight or three weeks. The grass was coming away nicely. Cr Mackenzie asked under whoso management tlie .links would bo run and what arrangements !h«d been mado for subscriptions. Cr Lancaster said the Borough Council would control tihe links. It" was decided that Crs Bryson and Mackenzie bo a committee to confer and report to the adjourned mceirng with members of the old Golf Olub of the Board a fortnight hence.. BOROUGH ♦COUNCIL. TWo Borough Council then proceeded with its business. Mr W. J. Rodhe, C.E., wrote agroeing to vifJit Levin under the conditions offered by the Council for the purpose of consulting on the proposed appointment's of an advisory engineer to report upon the requirements of tlie Borough. The Hawera Borough Council forwarded information concerning its lirebell. I Cr Packer reported upon the Fire Brigade. Ho stated the Committee | hind decided to recommend the sale of J ':iho old manual engine for £45. The Brigade wanted to know when the fire would be cleaned. Tlicy had written away to two centres for second hand hydrants. The captain of the Brigade had said the plant was now in as good lighting trim a<- il: was possible to make it. Tlh'e Council endorsed the proposal to sell t)lie engine. Mr Channings said the work of cleaning round th© plugs was in progress and when the present tairring operations were completed ho would tar round litre plugs. Mr J. T. Oak wrote aMking for the right to remove fencing, etc., from Borough sectiion of which line had been air occupier.—The matter was left in the hands of the Sanitation Committee. The Secretary of the Fox ton Harbour Board (Mr W. Bock) wrote calling attention to the loan poll for tho Foxton wharf purchase.—Tlhe lr.V:ite-r was received, councillons considering that every effort, should bo made to arouse interest in the loan. THE GASWORKS, The gasworks manager (Mr A. iiinreljl) reported t'hat during the month ending AprVl 20th steady progres-i had been made. The output of ana totalled 636,200 cubic feet as against 522,80011 for the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 113.400 cubic feet : ior the month. The gas consumed for cooking during the nion>';h was more than double the amount sold for Fighting, which clearly illustrated the popularity of the gai> cooker and tho manager (hoped to extend the business in this direction as gas cookers were, now being manufactured in New Zealand and should be available in the near future. A good deal of fitting was done during 'the month and the work|< maintained in good running order. Residuals were in good | demand, especially coke. Coal .supplies were coming to hand! more regularly and at time of witting between (io and 70 tons were in stock. Or Bull, a member of the Gas Committee, said that since laa'j meeting the tar had increased by 500 gallons. The •Chairman said till© Overseer was going to use the tar this week. NEW RANGER. In connection with tlie appointment of a rangier the following resolution waK carried on tlie motion at C'l" Lancaster, seconded by Cr Parker: lliat this Cbuno'l apply to the County Council for its consent to their ranger also acting on behalf of the Booongjh and if obtained that- Mr Watson be appointed Borough Ranger at the salary of £1 per week with i'ull power to prosecute all owners of stock, e/jher strajA'ng, herded or tethered on the roads, to start from Saturday,. May 18.
