Military Service Appeals.
Some Local Cases.
At the sitting of the .Military Appeal Board in Palmerston yesterday, the following cases were dealt with. Charlii- Leonard Oarmont, jockey, Levin, produced a birth 'certificate showing that he was under age. His appeal was allowed. Harold: Hook, Shannon, hairdresser, stated lie had arranged for a man to manage his business who could not take over for a montlh. He asked for a month 'k leave to take stook and instal the man. Leave un|iil July 3. Alfred Cuttis, farmer Oliau, stated lie was in the same position as on the ptevious occasion he was before the Boa'id. Hfls brother 'had returned from tih'O front, but was unfit for work and had bewn discharged wif\h a small pension.. Leave granted) till June 5. Gunner O. .Horrobin and Gunner A. Horrobin (Ohau), of the Fifth Reinforcements, home on furlough from active service, appealed for extension of leave for three months. Gunner A. Horrobin said that ho would withdraw bis application for an extension of leave if hi.'s brother were granted total exemption. The sotcliers had been allowed home to wi'iidi up their father's estate. They had four other brothers at the front, liivo of whom were married. Tlie only members of tlhe family a.t homo were the niarr'.ed brother's wives. Since they had come home they had found that their father had dtocl and lr.aue a will to which tiled" stepmother objected. She was endeavouring to have the will vaif.'ed uiulor tlie Families' Maintenance Act. Appclllnnt had disposed of iliis own property at Levin. One of his brothers at the front had two farms in "Levin which must be looked after. His brother Oswald had already had three and a half years' scrvvco and he did nofc. think it was too much to ask for him to bo exempted. The brothers at the front had, tried to persuade Oswald to stay ifJ home. The chairman said tJlilev must realise that there was an urgent need for men at the front, and that they were both drained men. Tho appellant replied; '•at the nistin reason Tor wishing Oswald to stay at home was to settle up his father's will. Mr McLaren. (member of tflio Board) said the Hoard could ncfi grant a discharge. Appellant replied that s leave would bo of very little good because liis brother could, not settle down to work under circumstances. "Personally I would rafcher go into camp straight away than dlo nothing for two weeks," said appellant. Decision ivaa reserved.
