Haig's Report.
THE YPRES WITHDRAWAL SOHME FRONT AGAIN BUSY. Received 8.55 a.m. this day. London, April 17, 2.25 p.m.. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We successfully counter-atta-cked "last evening in tlie neighbourhood of Wytschaete. Our counter attack also restored tlie situation at Meterem which we retain. We repulsed with loss repeated attacks northward of Bailleul. Our fire at close range caught bodies of enemy infantry advancing in close formation, inflicting heavy casualties. The enemy endeavoured to develop an attack at midday yesterday eastward of Robecz, but our artillery broke up the advance. In consequence of the enemy s progress on tlie Lys front our troops in the forward positions eastward of Ypres withdrew to if new line. The withdrawal was carried out. deliberately and undisturbed by the enemy. German parties advancing over the old positions were caught and destroyed by fire from our outposts. There is considerably increased hostile artillery fire this morning on the British front south of the Somme.
