Sir Douglas Haig reports: We advanced our fine slightly during the night on the south bank of the Somme, eastward of Vire-aous-Corbie. _ There was increased hostile artillerying during the night on the whole battle front and heavy hostile gas shelling between Lens and the La Baa see canal, also eastward of Armentieres. A FRENCH WITHDRAWAL. Received this day at 8.35. Paris, April 8. The Petit Parisien says the Germans will doubtless glorify the German occupation of Lower Gouehy forest, from whicfi' the French withdrawn! was almost inevitable. The withdrawal was accomplished voluntarily and nracticallv without cost, distinctly improving the situation.
