The announcement of the prices to be paid for wheat ne# year may come as a disappointment to many of'the growers of wheat in different parts of New Zealand. It is an .open secret that Cabinet has not beta fully agreed on this matter. There -fcre Ministers who are of opinion that we should pay enough for wheat to ensure that under almost any circumstances a sufficient supply should be grown to meet our requirements, and there are others who hold the view that if it is possible to encourage the growing of wheat only' at the expense of an increase in the price of the poor man's loaf it would be better for the country to import wheat. The Minister of Justice (the Hon. T. M. Wilford) had scarcely set foot on the Dunedin platform on the arrival of the noTth express on Tuesday • night when his good offices were sought on behalf of a returned invalided soldier who was in trouble with the railway officials (says the "Otago Daily Times")- It appeared that the man, who was one of those who had just returned by the three big transports, had got ahead of his companions at Christchurch and boarded the ordinary express with an open second-class pass. The trouble was that he had been travelling first-class, and the guard, in duty bound, -was demanding the difference in fare, some 6s 6d. The soldier could not or would not pay it, and the assistance of two "red caps" was called in. Just at this point the attention of the Minister was directed to the matter, and he satisfactorily settled it by handing over the amount required with the intention of claiming a refund later. The war-scarred soldier was left free to join his waiting wife.
