The Levin Chronicle. SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 1918.
In the course of a letter to Mrs Lucas, Mr It. E. Lucas, the wellknown bookseller and stationer, of Levin, says: "The Y.M.C.A. is a wonderful organisation and is deserving of the highest praise and help. • Everywhere you see the Bed Triangle, even up to the front lines,, and many a time during the .1916-17 winter we enjoyed a good old cup of tea immediately upon coming out of the l | trenches." j In connection with the licens- j ing committee election to be held in this electorate on Tuesday next, it should be noted that the general electoral provisions of the law in regard to holidays will apply. The Act stipulates that a public holiday /shall be observed after | mid-day within the district where j the poll is being held. It will ! also be unlawful to sell intoxicating liquors between the hours of noon and 7 p.m. On the day of the poll.
Owing to the Masonic Hall at Foxton not being available as a polling place, the location of the bootli there has. been altered to the Courthouse for Tuesday's licensing poll.
In the final draft of stations for the Methodist Church, the liev J. H. liaslatn, of Cuba street, Palmerston North, is appointed to Levin, and the liev. Mr Abbey, of Levin, is to be stationed at Grisborne. Mrs Milne, who has been postmistress at Ohau for some time past, has been transferred to Greenmeadows. She was accorded a send-off last evening. Mrs Milhe lias been resident 111 the district at Manakuu, Levin and Ohau, for a great many years and will be much missed by her many friends.
The coming licensing election was referred to at the Horowhenua County Council meeting today. The Clerk (Mr P. W. Goldsmith) stated that he had written to the llegistrar asking what tiie position was if one candidate withdrew and was informed that this would have 110 effect as the election had to proceed if there was no withdrawal before the closing of nominations. Cr McLeavey said when lie found out tlia.t there was to be an election he had offered to withdraw to save the expense. The Chairman (Cr Monk) pointed out that the local bodies concerned had to pay the'expenses in proportion to the number of hotels within their boundaries, v Levin only had two hotels and the County one, while Otaki had five, consequently the expense to that town would be heavy. He considered it a pity that there should be an election for only one man, but they should thank Cr McLeavey for his efforts to save an election.
