LADIES PATRIOTIC CATERING
j « ! SPLENDID SUCCESS AT THE , SHOW.
2s ot tlie least successful pari of yesterday's successful biio»- was tlie catering undertaken fur pa- ! triotic purposes by the ladies of I Levin and district. The ener- [ getic and self-sacrificing labours of the large and enthusiastic body of workers culminated yesterday in a day of toil that might have staggered the mere man, but the result more than justified the pains and it is estimated that the patriotic funds will benefit by a sum running well into three figures. From nine o'clock i yesterday morning till five the | ladies were busy in all depart- | ments supplying the varied needs I of the large crowd and only the I generosity of the residents of Levin and district made it possible for tlxe workers to keep pace with the demands. The result of the canvass of the town and district produced large quantities of food I of excellent, quality and variety, i and a busy time was spent in pre j paring it for the stalls. It would j be impossible to mention individually the army of willing workers iin yesterday's effort, but the ! heads of departments deserve a 1 word of praise. Mrs Hugh Hall superintended the main luncheon in a business-like manner that earned many well-merited compliments; Mrs W. M. Clark capably controlled the outside tea-rooms; Mesdames B. 11. Gardener and Plaster managed the outside soft drinks stall, which also dispensed pies and other dainties, doing a brisk business; Mrs Wliitaker made a great success of the sweets stall, most of the goods on sale being her own manufacture. Mr Fred Procter was in charge of the inside soft drinks. The arduous duties of secretary and treasurer were carried out by Mrs P. W. Goldsmith with her accustomed efficiency. The canvassers whose energetic work was one of the main factors in the success of the undertaking were: Mesdames W. M. Clark, Jas. Prouse, Heslop, Bevan, Tullv, Vickers, HcLeavey, G. H. Kingdon and Miss Kilsby. A full list of the donors of goods will be published in a later issue. It must not be forgotten that the valuable advice given by Messrs B. R. Gardener and F. O. Smith was very useful to the ladies in the good work all through the campaign, the former especia the campaign.
