Fireworks Nuisance.
At Monday's Borough Council meeting, Cr. Matheson enquired whether the Council'liad any pow_ er to deal with the discharge of fireworks in the public streets. Very heavj' stocks of goods were carried by business men in town he said, and there was a great danger of fire, as well as the possibility of accident to horses. He referred to the use made of iire works on Christmas Eve—not entirely by boys.
Cr Aitken said lie had experience of the lengths to which the practice was carried and it was as bad on New Year's. Eve. It "was quite time some action was taken to put a stop to the nuisance. Cr. Broome said he felt very uneasy about leaving his store on Christmas Eve. The Council should take action to stop the setting off of fireworks in the streets before something regrettable occurred.
The Town Clerk read the following by-law on the subject: "No. person shall light any bonfire, tarbarrel, or fire-work upon or within sixty yards of any public or private street or any public place." A breach I involved a penalt v of £5.
Cr. Lancaster said undoubtedly a great nuisance w-s created by the practice.
The Council agree,d that the bylaw should be put into operation and information laid against offenders.
