Borough Council.

The Borough Council met last Monday. Present — The Mayor (Mr Blenkhorn) in the chair and Crs. Broome, l3xill, c " kenzie, Matheson, Aitken and Dr.

Mr J. W. Farland wrote stating he had permission to erect a hoarding on the section opposite the Levin Hotel, and he desired the sanction of the Council. On tlie Mayor's motion seconded by Cr. Lancaster the request was granted subject to the erection be. in" a substantial one and to the satisfaction of the building mS. McEarlane, contractor for Borough coal carting, wrote stating he would be unable to continue at the present rate of Is Gd per ton owing to the increased cost of everything. He could not accept a renewal of the contract at less than 2s.—Referred to Lighting Committee for consideratThe Town Clerk reported that during the holidays he called a meeting of the Council to consider the removal of a building from - Bristol street to Oxford street for Mr ~F. C. Remington. The Town Clerk said as Building | Inspector he did not feel justified in agreeing to the proposal, as the site of the building was m 1 the fire area. The emergency meeting passed tl\e following resolution: "That Mr Remington be asked to conform with the nre area by-laws in connection with the building he is erecting on Ins premises in Oxford St., aiyl tha. the Council reserve the right to again review the position at the end of three months from a residential aspect," This meant that a brick or concrete wall would have to be erected and the Town Clerk understood that this was to ! be done. The Council confirmed the res-

olution. Cr. Bull brought under the no ice of the Council the culvert across Oxford St. in front of the Post Office. It seemed to be too small and when there was heavy rains the water backed up on to the footpath in front, of the Post Office causing great inconvenience to pedestrains. The Mayor said the culvert had recently been doubled and it was a very expensive matter to put these culverts in. It should be remembered also that the recent rains were abnormal. Cr. Aitken said flooding was caused in other places by exceptional rains. ..i-i ,i Cr Lancaster did not think the Council would be justified in tearing up the street so soon after the culvert liad been doubled. The Borough Overseer said that the trouble was that the culvert ■\vas so small that small pieces ox stick would block it. The Town Clerk said he was informed that the Department s Engineers would shortly be putting the telephone wires underground and it might be possible to consider the matter in that connectionThe Streets Committee was instructed to inspect the culvert and report upon it.
