PATRIOTIC TEA.

SUCCESSFUL AND PLEASANT

... It was a happy thought on the part of the Ladies' Croquet Club to give an afternoon at the Bowling Green yesterday in aid of the Y.M.C.A. Trench Comforts Fund, for, as a result a sum of over £21 was raised for a cause that has had far less attention than it deserves in Levin of late. The President (Mrs W. M. Clark), the Secretary (Mrs Sidney Hall), as well as the members of the Croquet Club are to be warmly congratulated on the result of their effort which was organised at short notice, but at the same time with the thoroughness of arrangement for which the Levin ladies are noted. The gathering took the form of a patriotic tea, and it was favoured with perfect weather and a special occasion on the bowling green in the visit of rinks from Shannon and Foxton. A small charge was made for admission and the rest of the revenue came from stalls and competitions. Mesdalnes Clark, Pollock, Walter Bull and Bawd en Harris were- in charge of the cake stall, which did recerd business and disposed of . a great variety and number of tempting goods. Mrs Whitaker, Mrs Port, eous and Miss Whitaker presided at the sweet stall where good business was done. In connection with this stall there was a guessing competition for a prettily decorated basket filled with sweets, the lucky winner being Mr Hammond Murray. The bran tub was in charge of Mesdames Nicholson and Holdaway and Misses Nicholson and Hammond. Under the able management of Mesdames Gardener, Mclntyre* Lancaster and G, P, Brown the tea room did good business. A croquet competition was conducted by Mesdames Kirk and Keedwell, Mr Sidney Hall talcing first prize and Mr Thomson second. The ladies of the club wish to thank one and all who helped to make the function pleasant and success, ful. The Club is sending the sweets left over as a donation to the Red Cross Shop on Saturday.
