U-Boat Massacres Women and Children. ■Received This Day 10.55 a.m. London, Dec. 5. Tho Elder Dempster liner Apapa, which was sunk outside a British poiib, caried 120 passengers and 100 of a crew, also mails. She was torpedoed when nearing home and commenced to sink directly tho J'x>rpedo struck. There were enough lifeboats to save all, but the submarine when the women and! children were* embarking fired a second ,'cwrpedo in order to sink the Apapa. faster. Over eighty iperished. About 120 were landed lih we,-t coast ports after great suffering. It is rumoured that the submarine fired on the women and children, in open boats. Those drowned include M r Townscnd, Attorney-General of tho Gold Ooas.t and other wcllknown West African officials. [Replying to a question in tho Lords Lord 'Lytton denied that tho naval escort';; wok Withdrawn when the Apapa was noaring the critical zone. lit was undersirable to publish arrangements for tho protection of shipping.
