The Cheese Industry.
A REPRESENTATIVE MEETING. A meeting of cheese factory representatives was held in the Show Grounds lccturc hall on Saturday morning. Mr F. J. Nathan was voted to the chair, and Mr St. Paviour Smith was appointed secretary. Thirty-eight cheese factories were represented. The chairman read a copy of a telegram sent by the National Dairy Association to all factories convening the meeting, and gave a brief resume of the meeting that waited on the Prime Minister on July 2Gth, 1917. He also placed before the meeting the position of the cheesemaker as he understood it, and concluded by reading an extract from "The People," dated Sunday, 2nd September, 1917, which stated "that the Pood Controller had fixed the priecs for provisions, etc., in England." The Prime Minister's telegrams to the Committee that -was set up in Wellington was read, which stated that a final offer of 9%d per lb had been made by the Imperial Government, and which asked this meeting to appoint two delegates -with power to act, to meet him on Wednesday, 31st October. It was decided that the offer of 9%d per lb be accepted if no better price could be obtained. That the delegates to be appointed get the best terms they could in the sale of the cheese. A number of delegates were proposed and a ballot taken, resulting in Messrs F. J. Nathan and Paviour Smith being elected.
The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman. —
