Labour Day was celebrated in Levin by the opening of the bowling and croquet greens, and notwithstanding tho wretch od weather, there was a splendid muster of the devotees of both games. 'I he green had been th roughly drenched by the heavy showers, but came through tl e ordeal splendidly, arid although on tlus heavy side, it played well, a tributo both to tho quality of the ground and the labour i f the custodian, Mr W. Brought on. Visitors were present from I'almi-r.ston North, Shannon, Foxton and Otaki, the most representative gathering yet seen on the local green for an opening function, and they repaid the hospitality of their hosts by giving them a sound beating. In fa'rness to Levin, however, it should be mentioned that most of the other towns have had their greens in play for some time past, and want of practice was evident in tho play of most, of tho local men The ladies vo<k»d up in strong forco, and the croquet lav,ii was never idle for the whole afternoon, giving promise of a most successful season. This President, Mr E. S. Lancaster, in declaring the green open, said it gave liirn great pleasure to welcome the visfting l>o\vlers. Levinites had enjoyed visits to their green and they were now very p'eased to be able to repay the hospitality, hoping it would not be the last time that their guests would basest! here. Mr Lancaster also mentioned the opening of the coquet club and wished the ladies a successful season.
Mrs Lancaster then sent " kitty" across the sward and the president drove the first croquet ball, thus launching the two clubs 011 their season's operations.
