A movement is growing to start a cooperative store in Shannon.

The following men arrived back from the front at Auckland on Sunday:—J. Young, T. J. Levett, and R. G. Walker, of Levin, and F. L. Stewart, of Otaki.

The Second Division Leaguo is steadily increasing its membership in Levin. An energetic canvass by the secretary, Mr A. J. Harding, has brought the total to jvev seventy.

A Washington cable to-day reports the death of Bod Fitzsimmons, the one-time world's champion pugilist. He was a blacksmith at Tiruaru before going to America where he astonished boxing authorities by defeating Jim Oorbett, the hitherto unbeaten champion.

Since the publication of the new electoral boundary, it was stated that possibly Mr E. Newman, M.P. for Rangitikei, would be a candidate for the Manawatu constituency. The new arrangement of boundaries, so far as it affects this constituency, takes in the southern portion of Rangitikei and the northern portion of Otaki. The " Herald " says Mr Newman has definitely decided to stand for the Manawatu seat at the next general election.

" The matter is already being investigated by the Government, and will receive careful consideration on completion of the necessary inquiries," was the answer of the Prime Minister to a question by Mr Field, M.P., as to whether the Government had yet given any consideration, or taken any action with respect to the intended operations in this country of the Nestle and Auglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, which is believed to be an alien company, having practically all its shareholders in Switzerland and other foreign countries, and which threatens to stifle local industries manufacturing the same product, and said to be amply supplying all present needs.

The benefit given at Farland's yesterday in aid of the school picnic funds was an unqualified success. Both at the matinee and evening entertainments the theatre was crowded and the program was tliorovgnly enjoyed. Charlie Chaplin's return was hailed with delight by more than tho juvenile portion of the audience, while the " Peg o' the Ring " serial proved to be a popular item. During an interval in the program Mr \\. Thomson (chairman of the School Committee) expressed the thanks of the committee to Mr Farland for his generosity. Ho explained that the school picnic would be held on tfte racecourse because railway concessions were not now obtainable. Mr Farland had generously donated a medal for the champion boy runner over 100, 220 and 440 yards and Mrs Farland had also given a medal for tho champion girl runner. Tlie children showed their appreciation by giving three hearty cheers.

The Maori entertainers under the managership of Mr Tuiti McDonald gave their original entertainment to an enthusiastic audience at Everybody's last evening and every item was vigorously applauded, numerous encores being demanded. The poi dancers gave a number of their extremely graceful dances, and were encored every time as were also the hakas which were given in real native style. The Maori drama and the singing, both solo and concerted, were all well received, and tho entertainment generally was voted a great success. Mrs U. Stansell and Mrs Bull were in charge of the Red Cross Shop last Saturday when £6 lis Id was the amount realised. The competition was won by Mrs Bishop.
