MUNICIPAL GAS DEPARTMETT.

Mr A. Burrell, manager of the Borough Gas Department, reported to Monday night's meeting of the Borough Council as follows for the month ending September 26th: —During the month we manufactured and sent out about 100,000 cubic feet of gas in excess of the corresponding period of last year—approximately 20 per cent increase, which, I think, shows a most satisfactory position. Several new consumers have been connected up and two cookers installtd, while two more are being fixed this coming week. We have removed the two pedestals as authorised by the council, and side lights have been placed in lieu thereof. The usual amount of time has been devoted to general maintenance and attention to consumers. _ We are still able to get supplies of fittings, I mantles, glassware, etc., although prices for these are gradually rising. However, no inconvenience has so far occurred in that direction. The carbonising plant is being maintained in good order, giving good results and very little trouble. It is my intention to erect the new retort bench in the very near future. Residuals continue to meet with ready sale, and are disposed of as soon as manufactured. We are still holding good stocks of coal, and have in reserve sufficient for two months' ahead should a hold-up occur at anytime.

■ Details were attached as follows: — Number of consumers, 351; engines in : use, 4 ; coal in stock, 100 tons ; coal re- ! ceived, 60 tons; coal carbonised. 49 tons; number of street lamps, 47 ; number of stoves, 125; quantity of gas for street lighting, 48,000 feet; for house lighting, . 140,900; for slot meters, 45,000 ; for gas cookers, 266,000; for power, 51,800 ; for house and show room, 4000; for works, 3000; for library, 4500 ; for borough chambers, 3000 ; total, 565,000 feet; quantity of gas made] per ton of coal, 11,800 feet.
