MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

Levin and District Cases. Alfred Thomson, foreman, Koputoroa (Mr Cooper). This was an employer's appeal for time. Ernest J. Nash stated reservist was stripper-keeper and manager cf his flax mill at Koputoroa, and he also visited his mill at Takapau once a fortnight. He had endeavoured to replace him, and had given three men a trial, but they were all unsatisfactory. He was asking a man to take his place. He had about 50 men in his employ, and not one was capable of replacing reservist. Mr Williams: "You knew Thomson was likely to be called up. Why didn't you try to teach a man to fill his placo before." Witness: "I gave three men a trial, but they were not a success." Alfred Thomson stated lie was flaxmill manager, 30 years of age and single. He considered it would take two months to teach the man.—The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until 14th November. William Henry Polston, dairy farmer, Levin, stated he was 24 years of age and single. He was in partnership with his brother in a 100-acre farm. His brother was now in camp. The farm carried 48 cows and 28 calves, the milking being done by machine. Mr McLaren: "Why didn't you take this property up a year ago. Didn't I you think of going to camp?" Appellant: "I had my own herd and I got the chance of getting the property, so I did what any ordinary person would do." ! Mr McLaren: "I don't think it is [ what an ordinary persons would do. I Didn't it strike you that you might I enlist?" Appellant: "No; it nover struck me." The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until 12th December. John Hamilton Sinclair, engine driver, Shannon, being boarded as G. 2, withdrew his appeal, which was formally dismissed.
