Levin's Crowded Main Street.
TRAPS TO THE RIGHT—CARS TO THE LEFT. Levin's main street.is so busy on sale days th at better regulation of the traffic is regarded as desirable. Cr Lancaster suggested at last night's meeting of the Borough Council that Mr Channings, ti.o overseer, should be given power to regulate the traps and cars by ranging them on either side of the thoroughfare. Some such arrangement would be welcomed by drivers of both cars and horse vehicles. The Mayor said he did not think it necessary to do this. It was unduly harassing the country people who came into to wn to do business, and he instanced the inconvenience it. would be to ladies to have to leave their vehicle on one side and crass the street to business premises on the other side. He thought if the overseer continued as he was doing and kept the road clear for traffic it was all that was necessa y. Cr Parker considered they should not cause any hardship to visitors to the town. [ Cr Matheson said the main thing was to prevent cars standing two deep and impeding traffic. Cr McKenzie said that what caused more trouble than anything was car owners who thought they had more right to the road than anyone else. Drßryson: Do the centre lamps obstruct the traffic ? (Laughter.) The Mayor : You have had the ranger, the water trough, and pretty well everything else under revie ar to-night, and now you have the street lamps. I The suggestion was made that perhaps Cr Lancaster's desire for improvement could be met by appointing a fixed stan d for cars and traps, and the matter was
postponed for future consideration, on the understanding that in the meantime the overseer continue his work of regulating the traffic.
