LADY TAXI-DRIVERS.
The advent of a lady taxi-driver on the stand at Gisborne formed the subject of a petition from local taxi-car proprietors that was placed before tho Borough Council at its last meeting. Petitioners pointed out that the procedure of lady taxi-car drivers utilising the recognised stand with male drivers had been recognised in Wellington and other cities aa undesirable, as well as likely to caust friction between owners and drivers of different sexes. They therefore asked the Council that a separate taxi-stund be allotted to lady drivers, so that the two sexes may be entirely separate in the larger centres. —A suggestion was moved by Cr. Tucker to hold the matter over until there were further lady taxi-drivers. An amendment was moved by Cr. Mouat to refer the subject to the Works Committee. Cr. Mouat declared that there was another lady taxi-driver coming out next month, and there would probably be more during the year as the man-power was called up.—The amendment was lost, and Cr. Munns then moved that they should fix a lady drivers' stand on the opposite side (next Bank of New South Wales). A further amendment was tabled by Cr. Wauchop to obtain information from Ohristchurch and other centres before acting, and this course was eventually adopted.
