Horowhenua County Council has resolved to approach the Wellington Hos pital Board to ask it to consent to severance of Horowhenua County from the board's district with a view to having it .attached to Palmerston North Hospital Hoard. It is anticipated that the Wellington Board will consent; but should it not do so, the Minister in charge of Public Hospitals will be approached. Meanwhile the H<m> whenua County Council's seal lias been affixed to the agreement for absorption mode with the Palmerston N'orth
Hospital Board, which provides for payment by tins county of £2300, payments to be spread over a term of five years. An American paper states ETint Jack Johnston, negro prize-fighter and former heavy-weight champion, is now an editor. Friends in Chicago have heard from Johnson recently to the effect that ho has purchased an interest in a Spanish Socialist weekly 'and is contributing much of the editorial opinion. Between times, Johnson is picking up an honest dollar by ,bull-fighting.
Aii election of mayor and councillors for t.'he newly-constituted borough of Shannon will be held next Wednesday. Tor the mayoralty two nominations have been ,mad!e: Mr. AY. Murdoch (Labor 1 rer'esenfc'ative) and Mr. P. J. Hennessy. A total of thirteen nominations has been made for the eight vacancies to be filled at t'be council table,. For the first time in the history of Horowhenuai County Council, the council is receiving this year the full Government subsidy of £2500 on rates. In commenting upon this, and upon the county clerk's success in getting payment of rates, Councillors Monk and Gatlev remarked that Mr Goldsmith's endeavors had been highly successful, and Councillor Monk said that Mr Goldsmith had earned his salary three times over. Private Hendra now is undergoing medical treatment at the Soldiers' 1 Hospital, 'Hamner. A city youth secured a job with a farmer. The morning after the arrival of the youth, the farmer rapped 011 the youth's door at 4 o'clock and told him to get up. But the youth protested. '.What for?" he asked. "We're going to cut oats." replied the farmer. "Are they wild oats?" queried the youth, "that you've got to sneak up on 'em in the dar'k?"
