HELP FOR BRITISH GOVERNMENT. A PATRIOTIC COMPANY. "'The following extracts from the Chairman's speech at the annual meeting of the company held in London on Bth -May last will ,1 am sure, interest you. They give some idea of the sacrifices made by the people of England to enable the Allies to bring the war to a satisfactory conclusion.
Staff.—Out of a total pre-war staff of 2454, 1312 members are now serving with the colours, 234 have attested' but are not yet called up, 51 who had joined have been discharged from service for medical reasons. Of thoee who have been in the fighting line, 89 have been killed in action, 163 are wounded or missing, and 8 are prisoners.- • * With so many of our staff away, you can well realise how difficult it has been to cope with the work, and our special thanks are due 'to those of our staff who have put in so much extra work for the company, and to our new staff of lady clerks now numbering 1089.
"I .should like to refer also to the finnneia,] side of the assistance this company k giving to the Government :ind the country: For the purpose of assisting the American exchange, tlio company has sold or lent to the British Government practically all the American securities available for thg purpose; ;iki Any other secu'rfltSea which have appeared on the Government lists. The total amount of money lent to the Imperial Government in this way is £4,000,000. In addition to this amount, the company has subscribed for over £5,000,000 of the last big war loan. iN T ot only is the company doing all it can to assist the Government to obtain all the men they require, but they are lending them every penny they can spare."
