Fancy Dress Ball.
HELD AT LEVIN. At 8 p.m. last Friday tlie iLevin Driiids' Hall presented a charming appearance wjith its ■walls festojoned, with floral devices interspersed with, 'bright-co, lorcd flags; aJti 8.30 they were eclipsed by the 'brilliant and bcautil'ui (Irenes of the ladies. The occasion was the fancy dress ball that was given by tho members of the Kia Ora Assembly, and it was voted to bo the most successful assembly of 'ts kind held in the district. The hon. secretaries, Messrs. J. Edwards' and T. Winiata, worked assiduously, and are to be congratulated on the manner in whirih they managed the gathcriii'r of one hundred couples. Prizes v,-(<vp nwarded to the hest-dtresficd lady and r:>nt!eman. The committee had t, v -o wt capable judges in Mrs. M. S'-ii'-'i and 1 Mr. Ken Aitkon. but the •i n.Ving of a selection was a vcr.v difficult matter. However, they finally demlod 011 Mrs. P. Martin, who looked eTiariiwng as "The Harem Queen." and Mr H. Morgan, who made a perfect "Tmlian Chief." Special prizes were awarded to Miss McDonald, '"Eve " and Mr. G. Wilson attired as "Adam"; also Mr E. Allmand, of AVorero::. who undoubtedly made a splendid type of the Red Indian. Other pretty and notable dresses were those of Miss Ryder (Milkmaid), Miss T, Pvdor (Fisher Girl), Miss H. (Ryder Hawke's Bay (Flower Girl), Miss Bro'u ah ton (Indian Girl), Miss Bennett (Folly), Miss Moore (Good Luck). ® lrß H. Thompson (Japanese Lady), Mrs Mci Donald (Maori) Chiftainess), MJss Thompson Olvau, (Maori Cliieftainess). Mrs Edwards (Russian Girl), Miss T. Watson (Starlight Fairy), Miss 1. Hook (Dutch Boy), Miss McTaggart (Queen of-Hearts and [Diamonds) Miss McTaggart (Cowboy). Miss L Stratton (Carmen TVancmg 'Girl), Miss Marr (Jockey), Miss Gallagher (jNaval Officer), Mrs Thomas (Maori Chieftainess), Miss Friend (Dutch Boy), Miss Astr'idge (Stingaree), Miss Honore (Ivy), Miss O'Connor (Returned Soldier), Miss 'Kelleher (Indinn Squaw), Miss McCarthy,( Haw- 1 ke's Bay (Old English). Mies Rona Williams looked really well as 'Dutch Girl, and so did Mrs Renall in Order of the Bath.
The men's characters were ns follows :—Mr. E. Allmand Indian, Mr M. Winata tennis, Mr. J. Ryder jockey, Mr Barnett imp, Mr. Toha Winiata cricket, Mr Anderson scout, Mr W. Bell jester, Mr iL. Williams pierrot,
There were twenty entries for the waltzing competition, and the able judges, Messrs W. IBroughton and Grey Phillips finally were unable to make a distinction between Mr M. Winiata and his partner Mrs Edwards and Mr. A. Walker and his partner Mrs Thomas; so a tie resulted. The judges complimented the competHtors on their waltzing. Excellent music was supplied by Mr Benny Enoka. Tho M.C.'s carried out their duties in most effective manner. An excellent supper was supplied by Mr 'Williams. Flags for the decorations were lent by Mr D. Matheson. Dancing was kept up until "the sma' wee hours" of morning.
