The many friends of Surgeon-Cap-tain H. A. Davies, formerly of Levin, will be gf.ad to hear that he has recovered from his recent illness and is. now in charge of the new military hospital -at Torquay. England. Before taking up his appointment, Dr. IXavies and Mrs (Davies, with several other New Zealanders. were presented to the King and Queen, at Windsor Castle. Closer settlement was referred to in the House of .Representatives tins week, when 'Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. asked the Minister of Lands what progress has been made in the direction of acquiring land in the Otaki, Levin and Foxton districts for returned jsoldiers settlements? The 'Rt. Hon. Mr Masseyi replied: 'Inquiries are being made re a block near Otaki, but the Department 'has been disappointed regarding a block near Levin. A portion of the property referred to is to be disposed of privately. The matter is not being lost sight of.
A Wellington contemporary has unearthed a real utility breed of poultry, which should be in 'big demand. In a description of the Home of Compassion at Island Bay, the paper says:—"There is a fowlyaird at the home allso, so plenty of fresh milk is obtainable."—•Opuiiake Times.
In consequence of the near approach of the lambing season, and the harrying of sheep on his property by the dogs of sportsmen and others, Mr. J. M. Milne has laid poison on his farm at Gladstone road, Levin. All! trespassers will ,be prosecuted. An advertisement appears on page 3.
The tender of G. K. Douglas, 'Ltd.. Levin, has been accepted by Horowlieuua 'County Council, in accordance with schedule for the Ivuku Waterrace Extension Contract 'No. 258,
An exchange reports 'that among the irecent victims of the war "was Private Leslie Hunt, the eiglieenth son of the late Mr. Stephen Hunt, of French Farm, who had twenty-eight cliiLdreiu. Three other sons are at the front.
For metalling the main road from Levin Borough Boundary to the south end of the Horowhenua Village Settlement, the tender of Messrs. Winter uid Close has been accepted by th< Horowhenua County Council. The price ia 4s 6d per yard. The same irm has secured the main road oontraof (liotli ends) at 3s per yard, the Muhunoa East road at 2s Gd, the Oliau West road at 2s 9d, and the Muhunoa West 'road at 4s.
