« Iu tlie list of the soldiers farewelled by Levin. Patriotic Society last Tuesday night the name of Mr O. ißetter appeared, but by an oversight it was omitted from our report. [In the latest casualty list appears the name of (Enoch Coppin, formerly a resident of Levin. C. E." Bird, Manakau, and A. Kennedy, Levin, are others in the list. vA very enjoyable euchre party was' held in St. Mary's schoolroom, (Levin, last night. About seventy parishioners and their friends were present, and fifteen tables were filled. The function was initiated by the efforts of four memibers of the vestry, and it proved to he one of the most enjoyable social functions that has ibeen held for a long time past. On Thursday evening an enjoyaWo dance was held in the Druids' Hall, Levin, by the performers who gave tlhe entertainment at the Patriotic Society's "send-off" to the local soldiers on Tuesday last. Tlie dance was or- , ganiiized by a committee of the per- ' formers, and was voted by those present such a success that it is proposed to make the gathering a monthly one.' The game were keenly contested. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs ,T). P. I'or toons' and the gentlemen's resulted [ in a tio between Mr W. Thomson and ■Mr C. S. Iveedwell. In the play off Mr Keedwoll secured the trophy. The tickefe iflorf the, Commercial Travellers art union are selling very freely in Levin—the funds from which are to go to the Red Cross. Those w!ho desire mam leave their tickets at 'Mrs Hall's tobacconist shop before next Thursday, and may also get their parcels from there. By a slip of the pen, our report on the Patriotic Society® concert at Levin made it appear that Miss Boyd was the leading violinist in the orchestra. The violinist was Miss Andrews. In yesterday's list of soldiers wounded at the front appeared the name of Hector McDonald, Levin. It came out in evidence at the Assessment Court on Thursday last (says the Te Aroha Xews) that the district valuer had reduced in many instances the values placed upon lands "by local values. Tlie. district valuer explained that he had out down the unimproved values estimated by the local values by £3 per acre, ibecause lie considered the present conditions wer abnormal to approximately that extent. Private F. Earles, a 'New Zealand soldier who is a prisoner of war in Turkey, writes that he is "receiving 2s 8d! a day and find ihdmself." He states that there has been a good deal of sickness among tlie prisoners, and that the approaching summer was dreaded. Otaki Riacing Club lias declined the request of Levin's itaciug Club that Otaki forego one day's racing so as to allow of Levin holding one day's racing tins year, thus leaving Otaki ■two days. A Levin deputation to tlie Minister for Internal Affairs now is being arranged. The Minister will be asked to exercise his power of veto | in favor of Levin. Acknowledgments of conttriibutions of stock, money, etc., to the iHorowlienua County Fund will he published in our next issue. |
