OLD MEN AND OTHERS.

(To the Editor').

Sir,—l wifli to lay before you a few straight-out remarks concerning my experience of five clays in the borough pit. I was engaged V>v Mr Went, foreman, in charge of the county council's works. •I made a. start on Tuesday morning, sth June. Mr "West stated: "ll would like you to take, charge of the pot." All went well; the foreman seemed qiiiito pleased with the output. D'liring the week the county engineer came down to the pit, torrk a glance at the gjnng. and departed. Things went well; plenty of crushed' metal in the bins, and plenty picked down in the pit. Saturday, 2 p.m., knock-off time, county paiy-day, the foreman came to me and said "I shall not require you any more, as the engineer told me there were too many old men an tho pit." Well, Mr Editor, my dignity was very much hurt; T went -and got my little pay of five days. I spolko to Mr Malcolm and told him that I was put off, by the foreman in charge 011 account of him sayiing "Too many rid men in tho*'pit." Mr Malcolm stated "I never said that; what I said to Mr West was 'I don't admire your gang." Mi - Malcolm added ''I put tliis man in charge." .1 was satisfied with tho explanation. Well, Mr Edit- r, I am tho youngest of the "old men gang," and have an independent spirit and can hold my own as a worker; and wish Mr West all good luck for being so over-anxious to servo his superior. If he thinks this is not put exactly, as it happened he can write about it, but it is right. Mr [Editor, I must thank you for consideration in giving me space to try to solve a mystery.— I am. etc., iE. L. CURTIS.
