Wanted —A Man

MILITARY SERVICE BOARD IS AMUSED. A lot lias been heard when cases have been before the various military boards of the shortage of la.bor and tho difficulty of getting men. An employer who was supporting the appeal of an employee who appeared before the local sitting of the Dannevirke Board with an eye to tlie future took tlie precaution to advertise to see if it were possible to get a man to replace his employee, who had been called up in the ballot, and his advertisement and the two replies he received were read during the progress of tho case, the applications causing considerable hilarity.

The advertisement read as follows: — Wanted: A capable man on farm. Must be able to drive a team of five horses in very lii'lly country l , to cart firewood for cheese and butter factory and employees ; to 'l>e able to work all sorts of farm implements in hilly country ; must 'be a good shearer and able to take charge Of filled, shearing machines and engine; also to milk, kill, fence, and split posts and battens. Apply X. Nikolaison, Box 1(5, Ormondville.

The applications received were as follows:— Wellington, 25th May. 1917. Mr N. Ndkolaisen, Box 16, Ormonclville. Dear Sir, —'Regarding your advertisement, I beg to offer my services for the position. I am an expert driver, and quite capable of driving anything from 5 to 20 horses on hilly country. Should you require assistance in quill driving I should also lend a' hand. I am able to work any farm implement in hilly country (the rougher the country the more to my liking, and a good shearer, and able to take charge o? shed and shearing machines, engine, milk, kill and split posts. lam also a good fencer, having learnt the art of fencing in tho French Army. I might mention I am very musical, and can play the Jew's harp, Tin Whistle and the Giddy Ox. While having a rest I might bo able to entertain your friends. Am married with numerous children. These I would like to sec occasionally if timei permitted. iF'or references T can refer you to Professor Brown, tonsorial artist, cranium operator, facial manipulator, capillary abridger, who affixes hirsute appendages with ambitexterous celerity. Dear Sir,—ln reply to your advertisement for a capable man for farm I beg to offer my services for the position. I am able to drive anything up to 10 horses in hilly country, make cheese, work all kinds of farm implements, shear, kill, make fences, feed fowls, choke rabbits, or any other farm work required. There is only one thing I should like to know before taking the position if offered to me—what recreation you provide for a man in his spare time, and as I am a married man with several children, I should also like to know about how many times a month (after all work is fin-is-bed) I might possibly be able to see my family. Hoping to hear favorably from you.—Your truly, JOR G'FJX OLESEX. P.S.—ln spare time or on holidays, I should be only too pleased to fill in my time by doing a little butchering. The chairman characterised the letters as sarcasm, while Mr T. H. G. Lloyd, counsel for appellant, said they were the only two replies received to a bona fide advertisement.
