At the meeting of the Horcvhoniia County Council on Saturday, there were present: Councillors 'Monk (chair) and K ebb ell, Broadbc'.t, Venn, Stephenson, Catley and Freeman. Accounts passed for payment totalled £1031 0s 4d, made up of £630 13s 4d from general account and £410- 7s from loan account. ' T'lu< chairman, intimated that the engineer with Councillor ißydcr and himself inspected the propessd Ivuku water-iacc=, aud had arranged to have tho necessary alterations made in the lino of pipes. Tender® would be called for the work, to be in by next month's meeting of the council. The settlei-s had 'agreed to a deviation of tho pipe line. ■ The: AlWand'ra Borough s resolutions re the Government's provisions for returned soldiers were received. ■ ■ Te Mukunui's application for permission to fence in Manuka road, Tokemaru, (leaving access by means of a gate at the head of the road) was left to Councillors Stephenson and Venn, with power to act. Jt was resolved that if the settlers ' concerned (Mews' Liggins, Seifert and others) lodge the money they have •igreed to raise for the work, tho road vcpair.i! will he carried out. It was reported bv the chairman that the culvert written .about by Mrs Wocllet hod been attended to. Permisson to erect a gate on Beach Road, Otald, wss granted to 'Mr. G. X'oble' during the council's pleasure. ' Regarding Mr Air G. W. Heslop's claim for £3 3s—men's wages at Is Gel per hour for work done upon a public, road-it was stated that the council's undeviating rule was to pay its regular rate of wages without exception. The council resolved that payment of £2 10s be proffered. Kairan,ga County Council forwarded a resolution of protest against the Government's present form of special taxation, and suggesting the council s idea of a better scheme. Crs. iMonk and Kel>bell expressed themselves that such matters were not within the province of county, councils; they should , be doa.lt with "by the Faraniers' Union nnd the A. and P. Association and like bodies. The Kairanga resolution was ''received." ,It was resolved that Horowhenua County 'Council's resolution to limit to £30 its contribution to the expenses of the Main Trunk Bnilw.ay deviation Commiision he not departed i!rom. to. . . The Government Officer m charge of the War Relief Department wrote regarding a collection made recently —for patriotic purposes—by • .'Waikanae natives. The official a6ked if the Chairman of the County Council had given authority for the collection of the money. The chairman stated that he had given no authority in the case referred to. H© had no dcubt that the moneys had been raised for and applied to a proper purpose, but no application for permission had been made to him. _ The matter of having a railway subway put in at Tyne 'Street, 'Levin, was held over until next- meting. It was stated that the present level crossing was most dangerous, but the question arcee, Was the time opportune to do the work. It was decided 'that Councillors Monk and Stephenson and the engineer inspcct the road roller undei • effer at Elthain, and purchase it if .suitable; the committee also to enquire into the matter of road upkeep in the same district. The chairman reported that he and the engineer had viewed rollers and scarifiers at work in Wellington and were satisfied that steam rollers were , the only ones worth consideration. It was 'decided that the engineer seoure prices while on his tiip to Glenoamaru. Booth McDonald 1 and Co. ""wrote stating the stone crusher under offer to the Council for £300' was in good order, and at. pr.esent a new machine cf the same type was being sold at £450. The engineer was instructed to view the machine at Glenoamaru and purchase it if satisfactory. The engineer was instructed to enquire into the matter of securing teams for the council, in preference to employing contractors, who were scarce in some parte of the county. It' was decided not to accept any tender for road work in the Wirokino riding, prices being considered too high. : '
