Some twenty-five students' arrived in Levin yesterday to undergo a training course at tlie ILevin Central Development Farm. The big house on Bartholomew Est at o lias been enlarged, and renovated for their accommodation, ani;l the chief clerk to the farm is quartered in the same domicile. There now are some sixty people lrc.ited on the farm and 1 it® activities and usefulness are being greatly extended. "Would you be in favor of cattle grazing if they had liglits hung round their necks?" was a question asked a Woodville candidate for municipal lienors when speaking of the danger of cattlo •wandering a.t night. "Whore would you graze them?" asked the candidate, "Where I always do," came the reply. ' The hint was good enough for the ranger, who was pr&sent. Advices from Dunedin state that Mr JTosella, of SLevin, who was taken ill during a visit to the southern city, lias recovered to some extent, and he will leave for home one day this week. A Native Land Court presided over by Judge Jones will sit at Levin on Thursday next.

Mayor's Sunday at St. 'Mary's, Levin, held last Sunday, -was attended practically by the whole council and the mayor, there being "but two absentees. The Rv. G. B. Stephenson, in the course of his sermon, dwelt upon the duty of the civic fathers towards those for whose interests they were elected—the people as a whole—and tlio duty devolving upon the council to protect the health of the people. The maintenance of open spaces in the borough was most essential; the council .should set its face resolutely against anything in the nature of a slum. Unfortunately there was the nucleus of a slum already in existence in the borough. The preacher indicated the locality.

The Chronicle hears that L. T. Tourrier, wool classer, Levin (called upon to parade for service abroad) is already a member of the Australian Forces.

The death is announced {by cablegram) of Private F. Hughes, AVeraroa, from wounds received in action in France. The Levin and (District Patriotic Society iwisftiesi to' iaeknowiedge receipt of the very handsome amount of £109 from Miss H. E. Bowen, being proceeds cf a gift tea, fete, and concert held in Levin, during March and April last, in aid of the Belgian poor. The amount has bean forwarded by the treasurer, 'Mr P. W. Goldsmith to the mayor of Wellington fc;r remittance through that usual channel.

'Ibe latest so'dier to return to Levin from the front is Sergt- Guy Marriott, who is on furlough. He will- leave on hi.s return journey next month. He has quite recovered from the severe attack of enteric fever that laid him up at Malta some while back, and to-day he looks the picture of health. Airs Marriott still is in England, and is lestorcd 1 to good health, though a few months ago she had a return of the ailment that incapacitated her in Levin some four years ago.

Truant Inspector to the Wellington Education Board, against several Levin residents. Ilarry IHook was fined • lO.s and 1 costs 7s on- one charge and 2s and costs 76 on a second charge! Bob Hema wais fined 10i3 and costs '10s and 5s translation fee. Arapati Hiwin was mulcted in the suni of 2s, with costs. Henry Robinson was fined 10s and ccsts 7s on each of two charges.

All Indian named Singh Sham—colloquially known a!s Sing Sam—was fined los at Levin S.M. Court yesterday by Mr. B. R. Gardener, J.P., for having used obscene language in "a public place. He was convicted also on a charge of drunkenness.

In the Oivil Court held nt Lsvin last week, Mr Ken rick, S.M., gave judgment for plaintiffs in two cases in which defendants failed to appear: J. S. Johnstone v. P. Bowen, claim £3 3s (id, £1 12s; T. F. Gibson v. E. Moss, £4 6s 3d, costs 10s. Two judgment summonses were heard also. Stephqn Eagle Avas ordered .to pay £19 14s 5d to T. F. Gibson at the rate of 10s per week, in default of payment three weeks' imprisonment at Wellington. Edward Higgs was ordered to pay £3 10s 4d to A. iL. Ool© in two instalments, oii undergo imprisonment for seven days.
