A fire attended -by fatal consequen- » ces occurred early this morning, when the Wellington Hotel, situated at the corner of Sydney Street and Moles- . worth Street practically was destroyed. There were about twenty inmates at the tirns, several being (Maoris, but all escaped with the exception of , Patrick Twohill, a well-known identity, aged 74. Ho ,-wns burnt to death. The fire is supposed to have, had its origin in the sitting room, and the theory is that it was caused by a cigarette or lighted match. The building was about half a century old, and was owned by Staples and Co., the Wellington firm of brewers. It wainsured in the Atjas Office for £2250, and there was a policy of £500 in the Commercial Office on the "contents. Tli's was in the name of the licenses, ' Mr M. liyan. The adjourned session of the Supreme Court was re-opened this morning, • before Mr Justice Hosking, when the hearing of the perjury charges against IRua's .followers was continued. Tioke Raknipare was charged - with having committed perjury by swearing that Constable Skinner fired the firstshot at Maungapohatu, and that he fired a shot from a revolver point .blank at Rua.
