A LEVIN ASSET.
PRIPOiSALS FOR IMPROVEMENT
At a meeting of Horowhenua Lake Domain Board held last evening (Monday), the following recommendations in regard to the lake were tabled:— Report fcf the speeiail |3onunittcju appointed to cinsider and report to the Board upon the following questions.—
1. To report upon a scheme for a suggested appointment of some person te reside upon the reserve for the purpose of keeping boats for hire tea-rooms, and' the general cn retaking of the Reserve and lake. 2. To cansider the question of taking over the Assets and Liabilities of the Horowhenua Boating Club. 3. To report generally upon the best methods to make permanent improvements!. The committee appointed was Messrs .Robertson, Franfce, and
iDempsey. The committee met on two occasions and each time met representatives from the Boating Club, which gave the committee great assistance in their deliberation. The committee make the following recommendations to the Board.— 1. That the question of the appointment of a Care-taker be allowed to stand over till a future date, the committee considering it necessary to wait the development of the other proposals before making the appointment. 2. The- question of taking over the Assets and (Liabilities of the Boating Club was given serious consideration by the committee, and they ascertained the liabilities of the club to consist of an overdraft at the bank of £33, while the assets are the boatshed and jetty, together with five •boats, oars andi jail other property forming the present assets of the .boating club. The committee summarised ithe value as follows Iron £20, timber £'10, bo>a[ts, (etc., £25 —total i£ss. This estimate is considered very low. The committee unanimously agreed to recommend that the assets and liabilities of the club be taken over by the board.
The general improvements that should be undertaken by the board, the committee recommends, should be the following:—
(1) That a concrete retaining wall be built across the bay by the side of Mr. Nevin's late boatslied.
(2) That an estimated quntity of filling of 400 yds. of earth be placed 011 the east side of the proposed wall. (3) That the present boatshed be pulled down and replaced by bu'lding in the centre of the bay, and in accordance with the plans submitted by Mr. W. 13. Macintosh and Mr. H. Qi a linings'. The .estimated 'cost of the wall as given by Mr. ChannLngs, the borough overseer, is as follows
400 yds. filling £40, 33 bags cement £9 Is 6d, labor (concreting) £7, timiber £3, excavating £7, extra labor £0, gravel for concreting £4 8s; total £75 9s 6d. Estimate rebuilding shed £50. Combined total £125 9s 6d.
(4) That it be a recommendation that application to Levin Borough Council be made' for a grant of £150 towards the expenditure of 1917, and' which is intimated as follows:—
Concrete wall and filling £75 9s Gd, rebuilding and painting boatshed £55, repairing and painting boats £10, amount payable to Boating Club £33, contingncies £10. Total 183 '9s 6d.
All the members of the board voted for the adoption of the report with the exception of the chairman (Mi - . C. Blenkliorn), who said he was not prepared to re'eommend the Levin Borough Council to vote the amount mentioned in the report (£150); more particularly at the present time.
