Religious Objectors
EXEMPTION OP CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS WANTED. (Christcliurcli Star.) At the monthly meeting of tihe Christclmrcli Ministers Association, a large deputation of both ladies and gentlemen from the Peace Society waited upon . the association.
Mr Martin said that the deputation consisted only of Christian people. They knew that the churches had always stood for liberty and freedom of conscience, and they asked the association to take steps to stop the present State interference with the individual conscience.
Mr Murray spoke along the same lines and urged that every man should be free to decide whether lie should take up the swcjrd or not.
In reply tlie Rev. J. Patterson, J. J. NVii'tli and W. J. "Williams pointed out that although they differed 011 questions of military service, they agreed with the deputation in the belief in the saeredness of the rights of conscience. When the Military Service Ant was before Parliament they had sent a deputation to the Government •asking for exemption for sincere religious objectors. . Now that the Act was passed they could do nothing at present, but they had represented the rights of conscience and had warned the Government of trouble should sincere objectors be subject to persecution.
Mr Mackie thanked the association for receiving the deputation.
