The County Patriotic l r und scheme was explaned to a Koputaroa meeting last Thursday by the mayor of Levin (Mr Ulenkhorn) and Mr P. W. Goldsmith, treasurer to the fund. The meeting was attended by a representative gatherin gof settlers (Mr iD. Gardner occupying the chair), and the utmost sympathy was shown towards the proposal. IMessrs C. C. 'BJiggiiison aud J. Dunn were elected as to Koputaroa representatives on the management committee. In the course of the mayor's speech, His Worship paid a tribute of appreciation to the excellence of the work done by the AVellington War Relief Association but mentioned that there were tso many "drains on its resources that the necessity was becoming urgent for this county to show a .spirit of self-help in regard to the cases for assistance that were arising in these parts, and for the i stablishment of a County Fund of such proportions as the importance of this county warranted.
The hon. secretary of the Belgian Fete Committee wishes to acknowledg with thanks a donation of £5 from Mr J. M. Milne, land and commission agent, also a pair of real Doulton ■> from Mr T. Broome, free cartage .ran Mr Hook and the Levin Express Oi.
The Salvation Army's annual harvest festival wil take place to-morrow yiu: Monday night; it will consist of vocal special meetings conducted by iStaffCaptain Newbold; of a most interesting and ])rofitable character. Harvest decorations and display of produce will remind one and all that "The Eartn is the Lord's and the fulness thereof." A special program will be given on Monday night: it wil consist of vocil. instrumental and other items. Supper will be handed around at the contusion of the concert. A sale of produce, etc., will take place the same evening; a local auctioneer will disnose of this.

It is stated that Lieut. Tom Vincent, who has been in liosital for some time, as a result of being "gassed" in 1' ranee, wil return to his home at Levin at an early date.—Otaki .Mail.

Enlistments at Palmciston 'Xorth this week included Harold iHenry Palmer, engineer, Levin; Frederick Musgrove, motor mechanic, Levin; diaries Samuel Parsons, cook and baker, Levin; Allen Stevenson Horn, farm hand, Manakau.
Residents of Ohau are a-sked to meet at the Institute on 'Monday night next for the purpose of electing two representatives to sit on the management committee of the newly-formed iHorowhpinia Patriotic Association. Representatives from Levin will also be present to explain the position of this association and afford any information required. In the Levin S.M.Court last Thursday a list of civil suits was disposed of by Mr Kenrick, S.M. Judgment by consent was entered in several instances, and judgment by default in the following cases:— H. Walkley v. B. D. Scott, £2 17s 9d, costs 10s; A. Sims v. J. I. Crowe £3 9s 6d, costs lis; H. "Walkley v. G. McDonald, £3 2s (3d, costs £1; T. Broome v. Molii Uakuraku £117 8s sd, costs £6 3s 6d; A. L. Cole v. Edward Higgs, £2 'los 4d, eosts 10s. After some time had been spent in hearing preliminaries to a claim and a. counter-claim—Perkins v. Phillips and Phillips v. Perkins—a. compromise was arranged between counsel and the litigants, and the magistrate entered judgment by consent for sums agreed upon.
Tha name of Private D. Campion, of Oh an, appears in a recent list of wounded soldiers.
Another send-off this time to the men of the 27th Reinforcements is being arranged to take place next J'' 1 : day night at the Century Hall. This time the gathering will take the I rim of a popular concert revealing many performers new to Levin. The proceeds are to be devoted to the Car ligan Jacket Fund which has had some heavy calls on it lately, and needs replenishing. Fuller particulars will be given next week.
A sub-lease of Section 57, Block ii (.Hoatherlea Settlement) from G. G. Kelly to H. W. Bower, has been approved hy "Wellington Land Board.
Relative merits of- macadam and concrete roads were discussed at this week's conference of civil engineers, in Wellington. Mr. S. Jickell extolled the virtues of macadamise:! roads in Palmerstcn North, but Mr. A. J. Pat. terson of Wellington, said that the macadam road to stand heavy traffic had not yet been made. If the roads spoken of by Mr. Jickell had to stand the traffic on the Hutt road there would be a different story to tell. Mr. Jickell: "You have no good material on the Hutt road." Mr Patterson: "Well, I don't know; I think the material on the Hutt road is pretty good, but the traffic is very fierce!" —Evening Post.
' Anznc Day is to be celebrated on Monday, April 23rd (St. George' 6 Day). The true tiny is Wednesday 25th April, but the biennial election of mayors and borough council's is fixed for that day bv statute and cannot be altered.
